Why My City is Cool

The Mayor of White Plains has signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement--the first step to becoming a Cool City.

The Mayor has also agreed to have White Plains participate in a program to test out hydrogen vehicles. A hydrogen filling station was established at the public works depot. The vehicle to be tested will be a zero emissions fuel cell vehicle. Residents in the area who will test drive these cars will be able to fill up at the White Plains filling station. The filling station will also be used for refueling five cars that are being converted to run on a blend of compressed gas and hydrogen.

According to an article in The Journal News (August 6, 2008), in the City Center parking garage $425,000 is being spent to replace more than 1,100 metal halide light fixtures with high-output fluorescent tubes. These new lights will provide three times as much light and use less electricity. According to the Mayor, White Plains will save about $145,000 in annual electrical and maintenance costs after the project is finished in November 2008. It is estimated that the change in lights will lower the carbon emissions of the garage by 831 tons per year.
