Why My City is Cool

The Town Supervisor has signed the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement. The Town of Greenburgh has adopted a law that requires new one- and two-family homes to be energy efficient. The law states that “No building permit shall issue for any new one- or two-family dwelling or multifamily dwelling of three stories or less unless the applicant certifies that the dwelling will meet the requirements for a New York ENERGY STAR® -labeled home.” This law has so far resulted in 80 new residential buildings being build to ENERGY STAR® standards. A new commercial building code is being developed. Greenburgh has appointed one of the country's few local energy conservation coordinators. A solar photovoltaic (PV) system as been installed on the roof of Town Hall. This system, which was built with a grant from New York State, saves the town more than $26,000 a year. Greenburgh is a member of ICLEI.
