Why My City is Cool

The Mayor of New Rochelle has signed U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement--the first step to becoming a Cool City. The city of New Rochelle has participated in a program to install 2,700 LED energy efficient traffic signals. The program was carried out with the assistance of the New York Power Authority. These LED lights consume about 90% less energy than the incandescent lights they replaced. New Rochelle is a member of ICLEI.


New Rochelle is a participant in the nationwide Cities for Climate Protection Campaign. As a result, a greenhouse gas emissions inventory that was prepared for the City by an intern provided by the program.


The City is using 10 neighborhood electric vehicles (NEV), which produce no local emissions and are legal on all roads posted to 35 mph with a top speed of 25 mph. These electrically powered vehicles and can be recharged using a standard 110-volt outlet.
