Why My City is Cool

At long last, our ICLEI greenhouse gas emissions audit is underway! There have been various delays. Now, however, data is being inputted into the software by a former Village employee who has been given access to the records and who has the full cooperation of the Village Manager. The results of the audit should enable the Village to pinpoint areas where it can lower emissions and save the Village money.

After two years of activities and meetings, our Cool Cities group is considering its next steps. Founder and leader Catherine Hiller has recently stepped down. David Finch and Marc Karell are now the contact people for Cool Cities Mamaroneck. They will consider various plans and decide whether we should proceed with our ambitious, perhaps too ambitious, MAGNET (Mamaroneck Green Network) agenda.

MAGNET is a way to encourage our local stores to take steps to lower their carbon footprints. If they take environmentally responsible actions, they will get our MAGNET decal to display in their windows, alerting the public that this business takes the environment seriously, and encouraging shoppers to shop green and local. We have a menu of energy saving suggestions to qualify shops for the decal.

Mamaroneck is a fortunate village, with a thriving downtown of independent stores and ethnic restaurants. We have a strong sense of community. We have sidewalks and can walk to town, walk to schools, walk to the station, walk to our beautiful harbor.

The word “Mamaroneck” comes from the Siwanoy Native Americans and means "the place where the salt water meets the fresh." In our very name, the Village is defined by its environment. We want to help keep those salt and fresh waters clean, and we don’t want those waters to rise. Please contact David Finch (DavidRFinch@juno.com) if you would like to join our group.
