Why My City is Cool

The government of the Village of Mount Kisco, a diverse community of about 10,000 people in the hills of northern Westchester County, has taken a number of steps to reduce energy use. Most incandescent lights in municipal buildings have been replaced with more energy efficient fluorescents. Thermostats in municipal buildings have been programmed to minimize the use of energy. The budget adopted for 2008-2009 includes money for a hybrid vehicle. A container on village property has been designated for residents to drop off old computers, monitors, and televisions. The new library which is under construction will have many energy saving features including a geothermal heating system.

The Mount Kisco Conservation Advisory Council is working on report which will summarize for the Village Board the recommendations for municipalities that are in the Climate Change Action Plan that was issued in February 2008 by the Westchester County Global Warming Task Force.

At a Village Board meeting on September 8, 2008 the Board agreed to join ICLEI. Mount Kisco is using interns from local colleges to help with a greenhouse gas emissions inventory. The inventory for municipal sources has been completed and work on the inventory for community sources has begun.
